Reminiscences of his early years in Buffalo, including medical work for Dr. Cyrenius Chapin, particularly bleeding, pulling teeth, and setting fractures for the Indians of nearby reservations. Also, amusing anecdotes concerning the first agricultural fair in Niagara (later Erie) County, Dr. Chapin's farms, a trip to Canada for apples, thin ice on Lake Erie, hunting wild game, and an incident involving Jonathan Olmsted, who stole the cargo of a Canadian forwarder and managed to escape his captors.

Born in New Hartford, Oneida County, N.Y., 10 Feb. 1803. Came to Buffalo in 1829 to study medicine in the office of Dr. Cyrenius Chapin. He gave up medicine for business, and was a longtime partner of Hiram Pratt. He also served as president of the Bank of Buffalo, and was elected mayor of Buffalo in 1848.
